INDIANAPOLIS, IN (Pittsburgh Racing Now) – Kyle Larson is the latest to “spin and win” at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Larson prevailed in a last-lap, last-corner battle to emerge victorious in the Stoops Pursuit race at The Dirt Track at IMS on the opening night of the Driven2Save Lives BC39 Powered by NOS Energy Drink. Michael Pickens finished second and Justin Grant rounded out the podium.
“That was wild,” said Larson. “This track is so racy that sliders are easy to throw, and Mike (Pickens) was throwing everything he had a me.”
Larson, Pickens and Grant were the final three competitors remaining from the field of 24 for the final five-lap segment of the elimination-style format.
The trio traded all three positions and when the white flag flew Pickens dove low, Grant went high and Larson was stuck in the middle. Disaster struck for Pickens when he flipped in Turn 3 after he struck a rut. Grant took evasive action but backed his car into the wall and flipped. Larson spun a 360 to miss Pickens and somehow kept it running to cross the finish line to take the checkered flag.
“He (Pickens) was trying to park it on the bottom,” said Larson, who drives for Chip Ganassi in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series. “We made contact there on the backstretch. For an off night (from NASCAR) like that, that was a ton of fun. That’s probably one of the most fun times I’ve ever had in a race car.”
One of the coolest 5 lap dashes I’ve ever been a part of. Slider after slider with Pickens was so much fun. Glad to be the last one standing after that deal. Being able to race a midget on dirt inside Indianapolis… https://t.co/puxrf7wpck
